石英砂是一种坚硬、耐磨、化学性能稳定的矿物，其主要矿物成分是石英，其主要化学成分是SiO2，石英砂的颜色为乳白色、或无色半透明状，莫氏硬度7，性脆无解理，贝壳状断口，油脂光泽，密度为2.65，堆积密度(20-200目为1.5)，其化学、热学和机械性能具有明显的异向性，不溶于酸，在160℃以上时溶于NaOH、KOH水溶液，熔点1750℃。从矿山开采出的石英石经加工后，一般粒度在120目筛上的产品称石英砂。过120目筛的产品称为石英粉。
石英砂滤料是使用及其广泛的一种滤料，可做单独使用，和无烟煤滤料搭配使用称为双层过滤。石英砂滤料、无烟煤滤料和锰砂滤料搭配使用称为三层过滤。精制石英砂滤料是采用高纯度的石英矿石，经破碎、筛分、水洗加工而成，与过滤容器结合，用于截留水中悬浮物胶体等颗粒杂质。石英砂滤料广泛应用于电力系统、多介质过滤器、离子交换器、活性炭过滤器垫层及水中含有酸碱成份的水处理过滤，如有要求可酸洗。双层滤料池的石英砂滤料粒径范围，一般为0.5～1.2mm。
1、普通石英砂；物理性能: SiO2≥90—99%；Fe2O3≤0.06—0.02%；耐火度：1750℃；外观：大颗粒，表面有黄皮包囊。普通石英砂一般是采用天然石英矿石，经破碎、水洗、烘干、二次筛选而成的一种水处理滤料；普通石英砂滤料起到过滤作用，就像水经过砂石渗透到地下一样，将水中的那些悬浮物阻拦下来，主要针对那些细微的悬浮物。石英砂滤料具有：无杂质、无校角、密度大、机械强度高、载污能力强、使用周期长的特点，是化学水处理的理想材料。
2、精制石英砂又称酸洗石英砂；物理性能: SiO2≥99-99.5%；Fe2O3≤0.005%；精制石英砂采用优质天然石英砂，经过精心挑选，精细加工而成，外观呈多棱形、球状，纯白色，具有机械强度高、截污能力强、耐酸性能好等特点。主要用于：玻璃制品、耐火材料、熔炼石类、精密铸造、砂轮磨材、冶炼硅铁、冶金熔剂、陶瓷、研磨材料、铸造造型石英砂等方面。
3、高纯石英砂；物理性能：SiO2≥99.5—99.9% Fe2O3≤0.001%，高纯石英砂采用优质天然石英石，经过精心挑选，精细加工而成，主要用于：冶金、墨碳化硅、玻璃及玻璃制品、搪瓷、铸钢、水过滤、泡花碱、化工、喷吵等行业。
1、石英砂滤料的破碎率和磨损率之和不应大于1.5%（百分率按质量计，下同）。
2、石英砂滤料的密度不应小于2.55g/cm3，使用中对密度有特殊要求都除外。
3、石英砂滤料应不含可见泥土、云母和有机杂质，滤料的水浸出液不含有毒物质。含泥量不应大于1%，密度小于2g/cm3的轻物质的含量不应大于0.2%。
4、石英砂滤料的灼烧减量不应大于0.7%。
5、石英砂滤料的盐酸可溶率不应大于3.5%。
精制石英砂滤料是纯白无杂质，常用于自来水和水质的深层过滤。适用于生活饮用水过滤和其它水质净化处理。更加适合干石油、化工、矿山、冶金、热电、造纸、印染、制革、食品等生产用水的前期处理和循环水处理，以及污水的回收利用。
普通石英砂滤料是做污水处理时常用到的，外观呈白色夹杂黄褐色，这种石英砂一般都需要加工成粉状，在300目以上，而且不能有杂质和粉尘，是需要经过水洗除尘的工艺。石英砂滤料的拦截、沉降和吸附作用良好，进而让水质更加的清澈。
